Structure Fire: Groton Village
On Wednesday January 4th
just before 11:00AM, a passerby stopped Groton PD to report
smoke coming from a residence on Pasadena Avenue in the
Village of Groton. Groton Police arrived on scene shortly
afterwards and reported a working structure fire.
Groton Fire Units were initially dispatched at 11:06AM. Groton Deputy
Chief 862 arrived on scene with Engine 801 and asked for an
Engine with Manpower out of Dryden and another Engine with
manpower out of McLean. A minute
later Cortlandville was requested for their FAST Team,
followed by one Engine out of Freeville with Manpower. An
Engine out of Locke was also requested to standbye at Groton's
Fire Station.
At 11:10 Dryden's Ladder was requested to the scene. As the tones dropped
for our ladder, Engine 501 pulled out driven by
Deputy Chief 562 Dave Cotterill with a crew of Captain 582
Bruce Eck, FF. Jen Wildridge, FF. Erin King, and FF. Andrew
Clark. Ladder 531 left a minute later driven by Fire Chief
561 Mark Bell with a crew of FF. Tim Arnold.
Dryden and Groton Ambulances were requested to standbye at the scene of
the fire at 11:16AM.
Engine 501 arrived at 11:21AM and Ladder 531 arrived a minute later and
both began
crews fire ground operations. Locke units were requested to
move from standbye up to the scene and Homer F.D. was requested
for an Engine to standbye at Groton's Station.
Freeville Engine 701 checked enroute at 11:24 while McLean Engine 1201
arrived at the fire scene a minute later at 11:25AM.
Interior Crews had difficulty gaining access to the seat of the fire
which was heavily involved in the attic area. Crews
attempted to make entrance into the structures through the
front door but ran into heavily smoke and flames. Freeville
Engine 701 arrived at 11:32 lending her manpower to the fire
scene.
Firefighters began to ventilate the structure and gained some ground
before hydrants used to supply water to the trucks went dry.
At 12:08PM, a call went out for tankers to respond to the fire
immediately from Dryden, Freeville, Groton, and McLean. Two
tankers out of Cortlandville were requested from Cortland
County while a request was made for Locke's Tanker to
respond in from Cayuga County.
Dryden Tanker 521 checked enroute at 12:11PM driven by FF. Adam Talbot.
Freeville 721 and McLean 1221 checked enroute at
12:11PM also. Crews on scene converted to a tanker shuttle
operation. Groton 822 and Freeville 721 were the first to
arrive followed by Dryden and McLean's tankers.
Tanker's
were able to fill off a hydrant on
Conger Boulevard, shuttling the
water to the fire scene 3 blocks away. Additional tankers
were called for at 1:10PM from Etna and Lansing Fire
Departments. Homer's Engine 502 moved up to the hydrant on
Conger Boulevard and assisted with filling tankers.
The fire was under control as of 2:00PM and units remained on scene to
cleanup hotspots.
All Dryden Units were clear of the scene by 4:10PM. Other
units at the fire scene included Assistant Chief 563 Tom
Pirko and Assistant Chief 564 Rick Young. Dryden FF. Mike
Hall, LT. Troy Pudney, FF. Elizabeth Handler, and FF. Ed
Bell manned Dryden Station during while crews worked in
Groton.
Goodbye
2011, Hello 2012!
Another year
has come and gone. The Dryden Fire Department responded to a
record 281 fire calls during 2011. Out of all those calls, our
volunteers averaged a three minute and fifty-nine
seconds response time from dispatch to our arrival on-scene. On
average, eight firefighters answered alarms.
During the course of the year our department provided mutual aide
to our neighboring departments including; Cayuga Heights,
Cortlandville, Etna, Freeville, Groton, McLean, Harford, Varna
and Virgil. We also helped provide Mutual Aide to other
departments we rarely work with including; Brooktondale, Ithaca,
Moravia, Richford, Slaterville and our members helped with relief efforts in
Broome County during the flooding over the summer.
Thanks for another
outstanding year of service and lets make
2012 another great one for our organization.
